Ming Chen, Mike Zapcic, & Bryan Johnson*
Ming Chen works on all of Kevin Smith’s online properties, and is the technical expert at Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. Chen has a prominent presence on AMC’s reality television show Comic Book Men and co-hosts the podcast I Sell Comics! with Mike Zapcic.
Mike Zapcic is described as having an “encyclopedic knowledge of every issue of every comic known to man”, which he utilizes at Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, where he began working in 2000. Zapcic stars alongside his Secret Stash colleagues on AMC’s reality television show Comic Book Men.
A longtime friend of Kevin Smith’s, who, while not officially an employee at Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, can often be found behind the front counter of the store and as a cast member of AMC’s reality television series Comic Book Men. Bryan Johnson has appeared in a number of Smith’s films and will reprise his role as Steve-Dave from Mallrats in the upcoming sequel, Mallbrats.

Professor Ben Saunders thinks comics make you smarter. Founder of the first Undergraduate Minor in Comics Studies at the University of Oregon, Professor Saunders has written and edited several books, including Do The Gods Wear Capes: Spirituality, Fantasy, and Superheroes — described by Greg Rucka as “the best critical work on the meaning and impact of super-heroes that has ever been written” — and Comic Book Apocalypse: The Graphic Worlds of Jack Kirby (co-edited with Charles Hatfield). Saunders has spoken at universities, conventions, and literary festivals across the United States and around the world and also recently served as Chief Curator for the blockbuster exhibition Marvel: Universe of Superheroes — the largest and most comprehensive museum show ever devoted to Marvel Comics (currently on view at MoPOP in Seattle).
Ben will be moderating discussions on both the main stage and north side panel room.
Andréa Gilroy, PhD (University of Oregon, 2015) is a comics studies scholar who examines the way comics as a form is uniquely suited to represent identity. She regularly teaches courses at the University of Oregon and Portland State University. She served as the 2016-2017 Interim Director of the UO Comics and Cartoon Studies program, is on the executive committee of the International Comics Art Forum, and is the Associate Curator of Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes.
Andréa will be moderating discussions on both the main stage and north side panel room.
